Alicia Frank Haviland

Alicia Frank Haviland was treated for early-stage breast cancer in 1998, with her cancer returning as Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) in August of 2023. She then received a new diagnosis of Neuroendocrine Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) in July 2024, just one week after accepting an invitation to join the M44 Board of Directors. Despite the daunting challenges ahead, Alicia remains committed to serving the Stage IV community to the best of her ability. And now she offers the unique perspective of someone simultaneously living with two complex cancers.

A retired educator, Alicia taught English Literature, English Language Arts, science, and math in various countries, including Panama, Mexico, and Costa Rica. She was also a technology instructor at Everett Community College, and likewise provided support services for students with special needs. In 2015, she co-founded Frank Haviland Academy, located in Panama, where she provided English as a Second Language (ESL) education for elementary and high school students from Asia, Europe, and Central and South America. Her international experience as an educator, coupled with her fluency in Spanish, enriched Alicia’s understanding of cultural and linguistic nuances. Her rich expertise will help our organization develop effective support services for widely diverse sub-populations within the M44 community, including our Spanish-speaking members.

Alicia is a resolute advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). She has authored articles on DEI, contributing to various journals and online platforms. This includes her 2012 article, “Trayvon Martin shooting builds racial profiling conversations in New Mexico,” published in the Native American Online Newspaper, Dawn of Nations Today. Her personal and professional background collectively underscores her dedication to fostering inclusive environments, which is fundamental to M44’s mission and service delivery approach.

In the marketing and advertising sectors, Alicia demonstrated both strategic and creative capabilities. She held positions as a Marketing/Advertising Coordinator for Platinum Pizza, Inc./Domino’s Pizza and as a Senior Prepress Technician for Trade Products Inc./BK Entertainment. Through her work, she further honed her skills in marketing strategy, graphic design, and technology integration—which will be critical components of M44’s sophisticated digital outreach activities.

Alicia’s academic credentials include a B.A. in Secondary Education from the University of New Mexico, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She held two teaching certifications and also completed professional development in Blended Online Learning.

Alicia is a well-rounded and talented professional, a born leader, and a warm, supportive friend to others living with Stage IV cancer. She is courageous and naturally curious—and has chosen a boldly adventurous life filled with ongoing personal growth and learning. She also considers herself to be rather funny! (Note: Last sentence lovingly added by M44’s Founder.)

For these reasons and more, we are thrilled to have Alicia on the M44 team!
